What is Stress ?

At The Stress Psychologist, we recognise the profound impact stress can have on both your well-being and performance, professionally and personally. Stress is a natural psychological and physiological response to life’s demands, hardwired into us as a survival mechanism. It occurs when we encounter situations that require emotional or physical adjustment, whether positive or negative.

Stress can manifest in many ways and is often linked to feelings of overwhelm, anxiety, nervousness, irritability, fatigue, or difficulty concentrating. Acute stress is the body’s short-term response to challenges, helping us stay alert and protected. Many people experience this type of stress in high-pressure situations. However, when stress becomes persistent and starts interfering with daily life, it can develop into chronic stress, which is harmful to both mental and physical health. In today’s fast-paced world, chronic stress is increasingly common, yet humans were never designed to function under constant stress. Over time, this can lead to serious health consequences, including cardiovascular disease, anxiety, depression, and Burnout. Burnout affects individuals differently, but its effects are physically and mentally exhausting. Warning signs often appear before full burnout takes hold, including: Compulsive work behaviours, such as constantly checking emails on days off or late at night Struggling to switch off, feeling guilty about taking breaks Loss of enjoyment in downtime or personal activities Performance matters, but it should never come at the cost of your health. No one can run on empty forever. Imagine a hamster on a wheel, too scared to stop; eventually, it collapses. At this stage, productivity declines, decision-making weakens, and risky behaviours increase, making success even harder to achieve. While stress is often seen as negative, not all stress is harmful. Eustress is a type of positive stress that arises from exciting challenges, such as starting a new project, learning a new skill, or pursuing a personal goal. This form of stress can be motivating, driving performance and leading to greater work and life satisfaction. We provide expert support to help individuals recognise, manage, and prevent stress and burnout, fostering long-term behaviour change, well-being and sustainable peak performance. Additionally, we empower clients to harness eustress as a catalyst for resilience, enhanced productivity, and overall well-being.
